Western North Carolina is known throughout the nation as an area that fosters the creation, appreciation and enjoyment of the arts. In communities across our region, the performing arts have long played a role in building community, carrying forward rich cultural traditions, creating economic opportunity, and sharing the magic of entertainment. Asheville, the unofficial capital of the region, has earned its reputation as one of the most popular and engaging small arts towns in America. The performing arts-music, dance and theater--have helped to define the character of Asheville, past and present. Thousands of performances over the last 125 years have taken place in a series of six civic auditoriums in various downtown locations, attracting an estimated five million patrons. The current facility, the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium, has been in use for many decades and will be replaced with a new facility meeting the needs of the most complex theatre productions. The combination of talented artists, and interested audiences, have helped to nurture a special spirit that makes Asheville the unique, dynamic, artistic community we are today, but we have fallen behind comparable cities across the region and nation that have already constructed modern performing arts centers. The time has come for Asheville to create a new performance center. The lights are low. The audience waits with anticipation.
